Cultural Committee

Cultural Committee

Culture is defined as "the arts and manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." The act of being cultural is the conveying of happiness and pride in an expression of culture. Mount Aspiring College exudes culture, from music lessons to the Kapahaka house competition.

The Cultural Committee's main objective for this year was allowing an increased amount of cultural opportunities to be offered to our school community. 2017 marked the first year of two House performances - House Haka and House Singing - which were highly enjoyed by all. The cultural spirit of the school was portrayed in the dedication and enthusiasm the students gave to these competitions. The 2017 art exhibition supported by the Wanaka Fine Arts Gallery, gave NCEA art students the opportunity to showcase and sell their work. Art across all medias was up for display for two days in which the community could view the talent within the Mount Aspiring College art department. This provided students with a new opportunity to show off the hard work they have been doing all year. Congratulations to all those involved in the showcase.

2017 has also seen the Cultural Committee establish a strong relationship with the International Language Centre (ILC), and has included international student representation at committee meetings, and a number of shared lunches to encourage student integration. But the highlight for this year for both the Cultural Committee and the ILC, was the campus tour organised by the Cultural Committee to introduce new students in Term 3 to MAC. This was an important step in bringing them together with the local students, to show the cultural aspects of the school and all of the great things that MAC has to offer. So, in this way, they could understand better their "student life" and hopefully feel confident in their ability to perform well while here. We as a Committee are looking forward to keeping and improving on this relationship in the years to come. Other highlights for this year were the opportunities to be a part of The Festival of Colour, MAC's Got Talent, MACstock and the drama plays. I am immensely grateful for being gifted the opportunity to lead the Cultural Committee this year and look forward to seeing the cultural opportunities continuing and increasing at Mount Aspiring College.
